About Kingfisher County

Kingfisher County was created in 1890 following the run into The Unassigned Lands and the organization of Oklahoma Territory.  A strip of land was later added to the western edge of the county after the land run of 1892.  First known as County "Five," it was later named to honor the town of Kingfisher, which had been settled overnight after the land run of April 22, 1889, and named for a settler who operated a trading station on the Chisholm Trail.

The Central Hotel in Kingfisher housed the first county officials until 1892, when Abraham Seay and William Grimes built a three-story brick structure which they in turn leased to the county.  When it was destroyed by fire in 1901, county officials had a four-story brick building constructed at the cost of $29,990.

Kingfisher County is located 45 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, and encompasses 906 square miles of wide prairie.  The average precipitation is 47.1 inches yearly.  January's average temperature is 42.0F and July's average is 80.8F.

The town of Kingfisher, the county seat, has a population of 4,380.  It is the site of the Seay Mansion, restored home of Oklahoma's second territorial governor, A. J.  Seay. Built in 1892, it features furnishings from that period. Also located in Kingfisher is the Chisholm Trail Museum, which traces the history of the Chisholm Trail and features Indian artifacts, and a restored log cabin, school house, church and bank.

At one time, oil production in the Casino Area, Dover Field, and East Columbia Field was of significant economic importance. Today, agriculture is central to the economy of the area, with wheat being the major crop.

Annual events include Pat Hennessey Days during late August, PRCA sanctioned rodeo in June, Chisholm Trail Museum Barbecue in April, and Germanfest at Okarche in October.

Census records are available beginning with the 1890 First Territorial Census. Most county records begin in 1890. The county seat is Kingfisher. The Kingfisher post office was established April 20, 1889 under the name "Lisbon." The name was changed to "Kingfisher" on July 18, 1889.
