Dec 1912 Rufus Rankin Reed applied for his Civil War Pension in Clarendon, Donley Co., TX. Jan 22, 1913 Pension was filed and June 1, 1913 Pension allowed. In his pension application he states that he had been a resident of Clarendon, Donley. Co., TX for 15 years. Migrating to Texas in Dec 1872 from Marshall Co., Alabama and the 1880 US Census living in Stephens Co., TX. Migration to Clarendon, TX 1897. R. R. Reed was also one of the original Land Owners in Clarendon, Donley Co., TX - HD Section #38 Abstract # 1576 Texas General Land Office - Austin, TX.
Rufus R. Reed enlisted in the Civil War at Marshall County Alabama (CSA # 21506)Confederacy - Enlisted 6 Sept 1862 - Company F, 9th Alabama Cavalry, Russell’s Battalion. Hampton’s Company. Serving in the Cavalry Branch & spending some of his duty in Nashville, TN. Served until Surrender in the spring of 1865 at the close of the war. Adjutant General’s Office War Department Washington ( Commissioner of Pensions State of Texas at Austin) Feb 4, 1913 #2005884 Washington.
Rufus Rankin Reed’s grandchildren (Tucker’s) tell the story that their grandfather put up the First Water Tower in Clarendon, Donley Co., TX. I have searched for records and have found no records that denied this or confirms this. However; the other information that was passed on was correct. Which leads me to believe that he did indeed, put up the first water tower in Clarendon, Donley Co., TX.
