The Jacob Stinebaugh family settled in Trigg county, Kentucky around 1800. According to family tradition recorded in Goodspeed's History of Northwest Arkansas, eighteen young men from Germany/Holland wanted to come to America, but lacked money for passage. They went to England, joined the British Army and volunteered to fight in the American Revolution.

As soon as they arrived in America, they deserted the British Army and joined the colonial forces. Among the eighteen was the young Jacob Stinebaugh, who served in the Second Pennsylvania Regiment. According to Gerald Lackey, he settled in Pennsylvania after the war, but, in the late 1700's, moved to western Tennessee (Perhaps Wilson County-Ben Cook or Jefferson County-Melva Cook). Finally, around 1800 the family moved west again and settled near Cerulean Springs in Trigg County, Kentucky. The above senario is somewhat in conflict with some of the census data. Elizabeth and Catherine were listed as born in Virginia by the 1850 Census. Since they were born in 1788 and 1790 respectively, "Virginia" could refer to Virginia, West Virginia or Kentucky. Kentucky separated from Virginia in 1792, while West Virginia did not separate until 1863. Adam was listed as born in Tennessee in December 1796, which is possible, since Tennessee was granted Statehood in 1796.

Very likely, Jacob & family migrated from Pennsylvania through Hagerstown, Maryland, Harrisonburg and Roanok, Virginia on to Jefferson County, Tennessee. This Migration Trail was called The Great Indian Warpath Trail, and was one of the major migration pathways of that era. The route generally followed the path of present day Interstate Highway 81. This migration likely extended over two or three years. In that event, Elizabeth and Catherine would likely have been born in Virginia, but Jacob the Younger would have to have had been born in Virginia or Tennessee rather than Pennsylvania. Both the Missouri Census of 1850 and the Texas Census of 1870 give his place of birth as Tennessee.

We do not know who Jacob married, but there is some indication that her name was Catherine. There were several children - Elizabeth, Catherine, Jacob, Jr., Adam, John ?, Joseph, Daniel, Nancy, Betsy, Susan - and possibly others. Tax and census rolls indicate that Stinebaughs lived in the area as late as 1870. One descendant, John Goodwin, still lived on a portion of the original land grant in 1990. His son and daughter also lived in the area.

Jacob settled 3.2 miles northwest of Cerulean Springs on Poplar and Brushy Grove Creeks, south of the Green River. He operated a distillery and grist mill and was a cabinet maker.

Jacob Stinebaugh was on jury duty in Trigg County on December 24, 1824.

General Notes: James Cannon was born in Newberry Co., SC. At the age of 15 or 16 he enlisted in the patriot army and fought for Independence. According to his pension application James served in the company of Capt Mathew Gillespie at Edgels Station and served at Dugan's Station. He was with Capt. WM. Grady scouting and joined Col. Levi Casey in the hunt for "Bloody" Cunningham in the lower part of SC. His first experience in the west was with Capt John Virgin rafting the Tennessee River during the war. He spent two years with Capt. Thomas Stark. He undoubtedly met Rachel during this time. Rachel was probably a niece of Capt. Thomas Stark.

Upon completion of the war he married Rachel Stark, returning to Tennessee to settle in Robertson County about 1789. He would have been among the first settlers <http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/early12.htm> in this area. The trip was undoubtedly arduous for James, Rachel and their oldest son, Samuel, who would have been an infant or toddler at the time. There are 2 land entries in Robertson co., TN for James Cannon. #4479 "Transferred to James ______ 2/1797. James Cannon transferred to Robert Muir, 1797" and #4519 "274 acres Assigned to James Cannon in 1797 and Cannon transfered it to James Easton in 1797, with James Thompson a witness". (from Tennessee Genealogical Records, pg. 12) James and his growing family moved to Christian Co., KY around 1797. Many of his children were born and several were married <marriage.htm> in Christian Co., KY.

James and most or all of his children moved to Lincoln Co., MO in 1818. There he applied for a Revolutionary War Pension in 1838.

On this 4th day of February, A.D., 1833, personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Lincoln County, Missouri, now sitting, James Cannon, a resident of the county and state aforesaid, aged 70 years, who being duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of congress passed June 7, 1832, in That he entered the service of the United States in the year 1778 or 1779, in the State of Sourth Carolina, in the company commanded by Captain Matthew Gillespie as a volunteer, and went to guard a small station called Edgile Station, and afterwards removed to Duggan's Station – After the death of Captain Gillespie, he served under a Capt. William Gray, and was engaged in scouting parties against the tories -- that he went with several hundred men under Col. Levi Casey after a large number of tories called Cunningham's Men, and followed these men several days, and until they were dispersed in a swamp in the lower part of S. Carolina and took from them horses, coats and, etc.

He thinks he served nearly two years, principally against the tories—and was then drafted in a company commanded by Capt. John Virgin, and crossed the Tennessee River after Indians and tories and killed some of each. There were several hundred of our men in this expedition, all mounted and commanded by Gen'l Pickens, and was out this time about three months, which was in the winter season—and he volunteered under Capt. Thomas Starke, and was engaged two years and more under Said Starke in scouting parties against the tories—that he was born in Newberry county in the State of south Carolina, the year 1762—that he did not bring any record of his birth from his father's house which he left soon after the war—that he moved soon after the revolutionary war to Robinson County in the State of Tennessee—and in the year 1797 or 1798 he moved to Christian County, and in the year 1817 he came to Lincoln County, Mo. Where he now lives—he does not recollect that he ever received any discharge from the service.

I, James Cannon, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, towit: First, my will and desire is that my two servants, Sarah and George, who are slaves, shall after my decease have their freedom, and that my executor shall cause the necessary papers of emancipation to be made out, properly certified and delivered to each of said slaves as soon as can conveniently be done. This gentlemen exists only in my imagination and his existence is based on legends and folklore. The legend and folklore that came down to the Kansas Stinebaughs (Adam) is very similar to that that exists for the Kentucky, Missouri and Texas Stinebaughs (Jacob). The following is a recapitulation of the myth of Jacobs descendents.

In Adam's biography in the History of Arkansas, The Goodspeed Publishing Co 1889, it states that...."The grandfather, Jacob, was born in Germany, and with nineteen others joined the English army during the Revolution, with the intention of coming to America and as soon as possible deserting the English Army to join forces with the colonists, in which project they were successful. Mr. STINEBAUGH settled in Pennsylvania when the father of our subject was a boy; he next went to West Tennessee and later settled in Kentucky, where he died."
