Generation No. 2

JOHN ANDREW JACKSON4 MCBEE (JOHN GARVIN3, WILLIAM H2, OBEDIAH1) was born 13 October 1877 in Jacksboro, Jack Co. TX., and died 14 October 1973 in Fowler, Fresno Co. CA.. He married EMMA AKINS LEE 25 December 1901 in Milo-Indian Territory. Carter Co. OK., daughter of JOHN LEE and RACHEL MOODY. She was born 07 November 1879 in Grayson Co., Or Terrell, Kaufman Co.-TX., and died 29 May 1954 in Fowler Fresno Co. CA..

John Andrew Jackson McBee; (Jack) was born in Jack County, Texas in 1877, on the land his father homesteaded in 1884, remaining there until late 1890s when the entire family moved to Indian Territory, the area now known as Carter County, OK.
In 1901 he met and married Emma Akin Lee-Luster, a young mother with a 2 year old son, William Mirt Luster Sr. (Big Bill) as he was called, see Luster family below.
Jack was the only member of his family to move to the Texas Panhandle.

JAJ (Jack) and Emma McBee, arrived in Carson Co., TX in the late 1920s, to find work in the Oil Fields that were beginning to open up there. They lived in Skellytown, from then until leaving to follow their daughter Rosie and her family to California in 1941-1942, and lived in the city of Fowler, California until their deaths.
He lived one day past his 96th birthday.

Soon after moving to Skellytown, Big Bill's wife died, leaving two young sons, Robert Lee (Bob) and William Mirt Jr (Little Bill) Luster. Grandparents, Jack and Emma helped Big Bill with the boys until leaving in 1942. Big Bill and son Little Bill had joined the US Army about that time, both serving honorably in WWII.

I do not know how much formal education my Grandfather had, but he appeared to have learned a great deal by himself. He could read and write well, even learning to type on an early "Underwood" typewriter, which is still in Family possession.

He served as Justice of the Peace for Precinct #6 of Carson Co., TX.
The Certificate, signed by the Gov. of Texas at the time, "W. Daniel", and the Secretary of State, "F Beauchamp", (spelling?), is dated 25 February 1939, no term of office is listed. Original certificate and his "Official JP -Stamp" remains in Family's possession. He signed the birth certificates for many of his Grandchildren, and when SS was enacted, he recorded numbers of his sons and sons in-law.

He worked in many professions, while in Texas; as a roustabout, general labor,
pipeline and Pumper for many of the Oil Field Companies there, a couple that I can remember names for are; Northern Natural Gas Company and Carbon Black Plant.

The birth certificate of "Lola Mae McBee-Sargent", (his oldest daughter) lists occupation of her Father as (Coal Miner), which I questioned. But, after additional research I have discovered that not only are there numerous deposits of Coal in Texas, but also in Oklahoma in the areas where "Lola Mae" was born.
Coal being a vital mineral resource in both states throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, before oil and gas was fully developed. This information was supported by many of the older cousins, when contacted.

He is listed on the 1916 Voter's Registration living in Hewitt, Carter Co., OK, he was listed as a "Merchant", and I have a picture of him displaying his products, that he sold by going house to house, unfortunately the picture is very poor quality and the names of the products cannot be determined.

Great Grandmother Margaret Francis White-McBee came to live with Him and Grandma in about 1935, she died 22 August 1936, and is buried in the White Deer Cemetery.

After going to California at the age of 65 years old, he continued to work, having a
"Saw Sharpening" business at his home for many years, he also did regular farm labor, and as a floor man in a Raisin Packing Plant, was part of the Line workers in a local Winery and worked at the local Ice House for a time in Fowler, CA.

Notes for: LUGUSTA L.G. (GUS) SARGENT:
In response to my curiosity about how work in the Oil Industry affected our mutual families, My Cousin shares:
That the "Sargents", started working in the Oil Fields when the Oil Boom hit Burkburnett, TX, in the early 1920s, "My Grandpa ( Jasper Sargent ) drove a team of mules hauling the timber for the derricks- Daddy (Lugusta "Gus" Sargent) helped him. Mama and Daddy also lived in one of the "tent cities" when they first came to the Panhandle, of TX. Their 4th child, was born the same year, in town called ( Borger) later named Beggs, Okmulgee Co., OK. Daddy worked in Oklahoma and Texas before they settled in the Panhandle of TX. He also worked on the railroad, helping lay the line between Pampa and Lefors. He worked a short while for Gulf Oil Co., then he hired out for three days to work for $.50 per day for the Skelly Oil Co., staying with them for almost 40 years. He received three diamond pins from Skelly Oil , a diamond for each ten years. He didn't quite make the 4th one. All of his Six Sons worked in the Oil business, and many of them still live in the area.
