"Slitsy" Slagle
WHITE DEER - Francis H. "Slitsy" Slagle, 81,
died Wednesday, March 26, 2003.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in White
Deer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Toni Bailey,
pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers
Funeral Directors of Amarillo, 2820 Virginia Circle.
Mr. Slagle was born Nov. 28, 1921, southeast of
Panhandle. He grew up farming and ranching northwest of
Panhandle. Slitsy was one of the original sailors in the
Naval Construction Battalion government commissioned the
"23rd Seabees" into the armed forces during
World War II. Slitsy served in the Pacific Theater during
the war.
On Feb. 12, 1949, Slitsy married the sweetheart of his
life, Joyce Wiley, and they raised three children while
living in White Deer. Slitsy worked as an iron worker
until a life-threatening accident in 1958. After two
years in the hospital, he returned to farming and
ranching around White Deer until he retired in 1983.
Slitsy was a charter member of the James McCaskey
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Panhandle and a charter
member of the White Deer Senior Citizens association. He
served on numerous agriculture boards and was a former
member of White Deer Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Vivian Thomas of
Amarillo; two sons, Johnny Slagle and wife, Rebecca, of
Wimberley and Wiley Kim Slagle and wife, Dobbie, of
Bandera; a daughter, Fran Leiss and husband, John, of
Austin; four granddaughters, Shelli Bannerot and husband,
Alex, of Fort Worth, Priscila Slagle of Wimberley, and
Reanna Slagle and Kortney Slagle, both of Bandera; two
grandsons, Rocky Slagle of Austin and Travis Slagle and
wife, Molly, of Houston; three stepgrandsons, Jason
Lippy, Josh Lippy and Gene Lippy, all of Bandera; and two
great-granddaughters, Sophia Bannerot and Isabel
Bannerot, both of Fort Worth; and many cousins and
friends who will miss him tremendously.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
Visitation will be from the end of the service until 1
p.m.
