Joseph and Annie Lee Family
submitted by Anna Douglas Madden
Joseph Lee was born a slave near
Louisville, Kentucky, on September 5, 1859. He met and married
Annie Wood in the state of Kansas on October 28, 1886. Annie,
born October 2, 1864, was the daughter of James Wood and Mary
Wood-Highwarden.
The Lees settled in Oklahoma Territory after participation in the
land rush of 1893. The photo depicts their first modest home on
their original homestead east of Okeene. After much hard work and
thrift, the Lees came to own two more farms near Okeene, some
grazing land east of Hennessey, and a home in Hennessey. The
farms were eventually deeded to their three daughters: Ethel,
Bessie, and Mary. Two sons, Virgil and Louvincent, preceded their
parents in death.
The Lees were blessed with length of days and a long marrage.
They were together 66 years. Joseph passed away at age 92 in
1952, and Annie at age 94 in 1959. They are interred near each
other in Parvin Cemetery east of Okeene, Oklahoma.
