New York State Archives Genealogical Resources

The Archives holds many records containing information on individuals. Among these records are indexes to vital records (births, marriages, deaths); records documenting war service (Revolutionary War through World War I); land records (mostly transactions involving the Colony or State of New York); trial court records (including colonial wills and early nineteenth century civil cases); and records of some State-run correctional and custodial institutions.

Family History Centers are associated with the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and have access to its large collection (over 2 million rolls of microfilm) via a special loan arrangement. Family History Centers also have the International Genealogical Index, Ancestral File, and the catalog of the Family History Library's holdings.

The library has over 50,000 microfilms and continues acquiring additional materials—particularly for New York City and Long Island. Although the Family History Library has microfilm copies of some twentieth century records, most are of pre-1900 records

Set of twenty-seven rolls records information about vessels arriving at the port of New York from foreign ports for the years 1789 –1919. This set does NOT provide names of ancestors. Rather, for a specific time period, it provides : the name of each vessel arriving in New York, harbor from a foreign port , its arrival date , and the foreign port from which it came.
