HOWARD C. KILE 

Howard C. Kile, 83, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at The Groves in Independence. 

Mr. Kile was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Dane, Okla., and had lived in Independence since the early 1960s. He had also lived in Liberal, Kan., and in Osceola, Mo. He had been a coal miner in Alaska before working in maintenance at the RLDS Auditorium for the past 30 years. He had been a member of the RLDS Stone Church and Walnut Park RLDS Church. He was an Army and Navy veteran. 

His survivors include his wife, Bertha Agnes Kile of Independence; a stepson, Stephen I. Gunlock, Blue Springs; a daughter-in-law, Paula R. Gunlock, Blue Springs; three grandsons, Stephen J. Gunlock, Odessa, and Aaron G. Gunlock and Jason C. Gunlock, both of Blue Springs; a granddaughter, Shawn M. Sauer, Kansas City North; and one great-grandchild. 

According to the family's wishes, the body of Mr. Kile was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center. There will be a memorial service at The Groves in January.

J.O. PEDEN JR. 

J.O. Peden Jr., 83, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at the Independence Manor Care Center. 

Mr. Peden was born May 27, 1916, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a supervisor at Universal Manufacturer for 60 years. He was a member of the River Boulevard Baptist Church and the Lions Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Owen Peden in 1968. 

His survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Peden, Independence; two brothers, Stewart Peden, Edina, Minn., and John Peden, Camdenton, Mo.; and one sister, Dorothy Jones, Raytown. 

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

BILLIE M. BROWN 

Billie Marie Brown, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center. 

Mrs. Brown was born in Pleasant Hill, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She had been a cashier with Safeway Food Stores, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. 

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Elisabeth Eastburn, Puyallup, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia Ann Garcia, and one brother, Allen Bagshaw, both of Independence; two sisters, Annabelle Davis, Independence, and Helen Kitchen, Flint, Mich.; three grandchildren, John, Chris and Jana; and three great-grandchildren, Alex, John and Tori. 

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

LINDA S. TORRES 

Linda S. Torres of Grain Valley died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at her home. 

Mrs. Torres was born June 24, 1947, in Elgin, Ill. She was a manager for AT&T where she worked for 30 years in Illinois and Missouri, retiring in 1998. 

Her survivors include her husband, Angelo Torres of the home; her parents, Lowell E. and Edith E. Scarbrough, Warsaw, Mo.; one son, Chip Van Ham, Louisville, Ky.; one daughter, Jacquelyn Van Ham of the home; two stepsons, Nicholas Torres and Renaldo Torres, both of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, David Scarbrough, Anchorage, Alaska.; and two sisters, Judy Cumpata, Elgin, and Cynthia Wisser, St. Charles, Ill. 

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Juanita Heath, 75, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at her home. 

Mrs. Heath was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Lynn Haven, Fla., and moved to Independence in 1993. Her husband, Jerry S. Heath Sr., died in March 1993. 

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Bob Stikeleather, Independence; one son, Jerry Heath Jr. and wife, Janice, Powder Springs, Ga.; one brother, Raymond T. Zion Jr., Lynn Haven; one sister, Eileen Wright, Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Robert M. Stikeleather, Shelley Waln, Joy Dendish and Jason Heath; and one great-granddaughter, Shelbey Waln.

Joseph Michael Crim, 11-day-old son of Joseph and Lori (Ruckman) Crim of Butler, Mo., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at KU Medical Center.

ERNEST F. RISING JR.

Ernest F. Rising Jr., 52, Topeka, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at the Topeka Veteran's Hospital. 

Mr. Rising was born Aug. 5, 1947, in Independence, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a machinist for Fikes Metal. He was a Baptist by faith, and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. 

His survivors include a brother, Gary L. Rising, Grain Valley; one sister, Joyce Martin, Alamitos, Calif.; and his stepmother, Irma Rising, Grain Valley. 

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Buckner Chapel. Burial will be in Grain Valley Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 499. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

KELLY J. WATKINS 

Kelly Joseph Watkins, 17, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in Kansas City. 

Kelly attended Van Horn High School, and also leaves many friends from the Englewood Christian Academy. He was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church, and was an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 201 at Maywood Baptist Church, and was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. 

His survivors include his parents, Lee and Chris Watkins, four brothers, Lynn Butler, Chad Butler, Marcus Watkins and Jeremy Watkins, and one sister, Veronica Watkins, all of Kansas City; his grandparents, Joseph and Alice Shea, Kansas City, and Richard and Kathy Watkins, McNeal, Arizona; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nephew and nieces. 

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Charter Funerals, Earp and Sons Chapel, Kansas City. Friends may call from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

HENRY H. GREIFE 

Henry H. Greife, 81, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at the Maywood Terrace Living Center. 

Mr. Greife was born June, 10, 1918, in Aullville, Mo. He retired from Corn Products in 1983. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 21. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bethel Greife in 1992, and a stepdaughter, Betty Lou Bernel in 1987. 

His survivors include a stepdaughter, Deloris I. Mahler, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Robert C. Greife, Higginsville, Mo.; two nephews, Michael Greife, House Springs, Mo., and Darrel Greife, High Ridge, Mo.; and two grandchildren, George and Leslie Mahler. 

Services were Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Higginsville (Mo.) Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Cancer Action.

PEGGY A. RAILEY 

Peggy A. Johnson Railey, 68, Kissimme, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at a hospital in Kissimme. 

Mrs. Railey was born Oct. 13, 1931, in Stanley, Kan., and had lived in Independence, Grandview, Raytown and Kansas City before moving to Kissimme. She was a 1949 graduate of William Chrisman High School. 

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jim Shemwell, Kissimme; one son, Mark of Kansas City; one brother, Pastor Harold Johnson, Raytown; one sister, Rae Wergin, Laguna Hills, Calif.; two sisters, Laverne Mowrey, Yuba City, Calif., and Helen Miller, Walnut Park, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service was held Wednesday at the Osceola Memorial Gardens Chapel.

MARTIN KELLY 

Martin Kelly, 76, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at his home. 

Mr. Kelly was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Springfield, Mo. He retired as an electrician after 37 years of service with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 124. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. 

His survivors include his wife, Leona M. Kelly of the home; five sons, Bill Kelly, Fairgrove, Mo., Danny Ryan, Hayfield, Minn., Bob Kelly, Edwardsville, Kan., Rodney Ryan, Bates City, and Orville Kelly, Independence; seven daughters, Edith Kelly, Diamond City, Ark., Linda Anderson, Olathe, Kan., Kathy Bukowski, Fort Scott, Kan., Bev Mitchell, Buckner, Kathy Cotton, Houston, Patricia Kelly, Springfield, Mo., and Carolyn De Mersseman, Parsons, Kan.; his mother, Edith Mooney, Springfield; 28 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

WILLIAM D. 'BILL' BEATTY 

William D. 'Bill' Beatty, 48, Blue Springs, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at his home. 

Mr. Beatty was born March 4, 1951, in Butler, Mo., moving to Lee's Summit in 1992, and to Blue Springs in 1996. He was self-employed in a laying operation near Butler and at one time had 11,000 hens. At an early age, he was baptized at the Butler First Christian Church, and had perfect Sunday school attendance for 14 years. He was a 1970 graduate of Butler High School. 

His survivors include his parents, Warren and Ruth Beatty, and one brother, Bob Beatty and wife, Jayne, all of Blue Springs; a niece, Jennifer; a nephew, David; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins. 

Services were today at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.

PAULINE E. SUTHERLAND 

Pauline Esther Sutherland, 86, of Blue Springs, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Monterey Park Nursing Home. 

Ms. Sutherland was born Feb. 3, 1913 in Pittsfield, Ill. She worked on an assembly line in a shoe factory for a number of years. 

She is survived by her sister, Virginia H. Wyatt of Sibley.

Isabelle G. Klein, 80, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.

CORDA L. WHITE 

Corda L. White, 96, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Truman East Care Center. 

Mrs. White was born Dec. 14, 1903 in Lookout, Mo. She was a member of Norton Heights RLDS Church and a member of a Rebecca Lodge. She worked at Nell Donnelly's for 16 years. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Eldon L. Davidson and Evans White; three brothers, Ollie, Paul and James T., one sister, Ruth, and a step-daughter, Mary Louise Mabry. 

Her survivors include one daughter, Shirleen Cobb, Kansas City; grandchildren, Sheila and Jack Julo; Susan and Kim Christian; Stanley Cobb and Judy Donahoe; Sandy and Kenny Jones; Cathy and Rick Horn and Richard and Linda Mabry.

Dorcas Lee Hennigh, 79, Shawnee Mission, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. 

Mrs. Dorcas was born June 17, 1920 in Odessa, Mo. She retired in 1981 from being a circulation supervisor for the Kansas City Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Hennigh, in 1980.

RUTH CLAUNCH 

Ruth Claunch, 84, of Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. 

Mrs. Claunch was born July 3, 1915, in Kansas City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence and had worked at the Lake City ammunition plant. Her husband, Glenn Claunch, preceded her in death in 1979.

ADA R. WRIGHT 

Ada Rose Wright, 88, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center. 

Mrs. Wright was born June 13, 1911, in Cameron, Mo., and had lived in California before returning to this area in 1950. She had been active in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and had been a member of the Buckner and Rosewood Restora-tion branches. Her husband, Joseph Lyle Wright, died Dec. 6, 1991. 

Her survivors include two sons, Lyle D. Wright, Independence, and Ramon L. Wright, Bonner Springs, Kan.; two daughters, Vanice G. Maitland, Independence, and DuVonne A. Campbell, Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Minerva J. Myers, Monette, Mo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. INEZ L. SMITH 

Inez L. Smith, 90, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Rosewood Health Center. 

Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 19, 1909, and had lived in the Independence area since 1979. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and had attended the Ridgewood congregation for many years. In later years, she attended church at Heritage House and The Groves. Her husband, Howard Smith, died in 1989. 

Her survivors include her children, Kenneth Smith, Independence, Linda Hellman, Keller, Texas, and Jeanette Reyburn, Lake Elsinore, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
