Roy Edward Simsheuser Sr., 50, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997.
Mr. Simsheuser was born April 5, 1947, in Kansas City. He owned Roy`s Locksmith.
His survivors include his wife, Paula M. Simsheuser, and a son, Roy Edward Simsheuser Jr., both of the home; a daughter, Angela Marie Holst, Kansas City; and six grandchildren.
Cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.

CARY F. "BIG TOM" TOMPKINS JR.
Cary Finley "Big Tom" Tompkins Jr., 68, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Tompkins was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Los Angeles, and had lived in this area most of his life. He worked for the Gas Service Co. for 37 years, retiring as an inspector in 1991. He was a past Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 291 and an honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was an AirForce veteran, and a member of Masonic Lodge 76, Scottish Rite and Ararat Shrine. He was a former member of the Coventry Estates Baptist Church and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Blue Springs.
His survivors include his wife, Doris E. Tompkins of the home; three sons, Steven J. Tompkins, Harper, Mo., and Thomas L. Tompkins and Cary F. Tompkins III, both of Independence; five brothers, Charles Tompkins, Salina, Kan., Joseph Collins, Sugar Creek, Lawrence Collins, Edwards, Mo., Michael Collins, Pea Ridge, Ark., and William Collins, St. Charles, Mo.; five sisters, Jeannie Mays and Linda Erickson, both of Boise, Idaho, Florence Clopton, Leander, Texas, Margaret Boyd, LaPorte, Texas, and Donna Harber, Cole Camp, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. CHARLES A."CHARLIE" WILSON
Charles A. "Charlie" Wilson, 72, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Wilson was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Omaha, Neb. He was a mechanic for National Lease of Kansas City from 1963 until he retired in 1987. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Shirley Wilson, died in 1990.
His survivors include three daughters, Kimberly Henry and Kathleen Jackson, both of Blue Springs, and Karen Hunt, St. Louis; a brother, Jess Daniels, Omaha; and three grandchildren, Angelia Henry, Meagan Willcutt and Nicholas Jackson.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

SELMA WUERDEMAN
Selma Wuerdeman, 90, Raytown, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home, Raytown.
Mrs. Wuerdeman was born Oct. 11, 1907, in Benton County, Mo., and lived in Kansas City until moving to Raytown in 1981. She worked for many years for Lee Wald and K.C. Custom Garment. She was a member of St. Paul`s Lutheran Church in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Wuerdeman, and a son, Marvin.
Her survivors include a daughter, Margie Bury, Kansas City; a brother, Raymond Behrens, Eldon, Mo.; a sister, LaVere Shelton, Hartsburg, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 17200 E. 39th St. Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

ROBERT A. COMBS
Robert A. Combs, 71, Kansas City, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Trinity Hospital.
Mr. Combs was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Fall City, Neb. He was a stockman for Sears, Roebuck and Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 618, True Kindred; VFW Post 6840, Raytown; American Legion Post 598, Kansas City; and ACBL Unit 131 in Overland Park, Kan.
His survivors include his wife, Emma M. Combs of the home; two sons, Robert A. Combs Jr., Blue Springs, and Wayne H. Combs, Gardner, Kan.; a daughter, Barbara Camper, Odessa; a brother, Charles McKinley, Calif.; a sister, Delores Gianni, Ione, Calif.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

ELIZABETH L. SAYLOR
Elizabeth Leach Saylor, 84, Oak Grove, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Community Care of Oak Grove.
Mrs. Saylor was born Feb. 4, 1913, in Holden, Mo. She was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church.
Her survivors include two sons, Laney Leach, Blue Springs, and Larry Leach, Raytown; a daughter, Linda Boyd, Oak Grove; a sister, Virginia Corn, Lee`s Summit; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 7 tonight at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, where a funeral mass will be at 7:30. A prayer service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Interment will be in Leach-Riggs Cemetery, Lone Jack. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hospice Care of St. Mary`s.

CODY L. SIMONS
Cody Lyn Simons,2-week-old son of Larry A. and Lisa P.L. Heineken Simons, died Sunday, Dec. 7,1997, at his home in Odessa.
Cody Lyn was born Nov. 21, 1997, at Truman Medical Center.
His survivors also include two brothers, Leonard and Tylor Heineken of the home; his maternal grandparents, Francis Clyde Jr. and Lois Lee Heineken, Odessa; his great-grandparents, Francis Clyde Heineken Sr., Kansas City,Kan., and Wallace West and Norma Lee Henthorne, Edwards, Mo.

CORA J. ANCELL
Cora Jane Holder Ancell, 96, Fort Scott, Kan., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Fort Scott.
Mrs. Ancell was born May 11, 1901, on the Cherokee Indian Territory in Oklahoma. She worked for the telephone company in Fort Scott, for the National Bellas Hess Catalog Center and had cooked in various restaurants. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Fort Scott. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Earl R. Bolinger,William R. Nichols and her third husband, Charles Alford Ancell, died in 1990,and two children, Alta Mae Darnell and Roy Aaron Nichols.
Her survivors include a son, Estes Earl Bolinger, Independence; a brother, Keith Holder, Oceanside, Calif.; a sister, Maxine Hoenhaus, Los Angeles; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, Fort Scott. Burial will be in Paint Creek Cemetery, near Redfield, Kan.

RONALD L. BATEMAN
Ronald Leon Bateman, 53, Sibley, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Park Lane Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Bateman was born Jan. 10, 1944, in Springfield, Mo., and moved to this area in 1968. He was a painter for the Kenworth Truck Plant in Kansas City, and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
His survivors include his wife, Nancy Bateman of the home; a son, Bill L. Bateman, Blue Springs; his parents, Leon and Ester Bateman, Buckner; and a grandson, Dylan Lee Bateman.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

JOHN F. BOWSER, M.D.
John F. Bowser, M.D., 82, Hot Springs Village, Ark., died Thursday, Dec.4, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Bowser was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Kansas City. He was a retired radiologist and a member of the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines church, Hot Springs Village. He was also a member of the Hot Springs Village Shriners, Hot Springs Village Rotary, National Soujourners and Royal Order of Jesters Court 54. He was an Army veteran with the 77th Evacuation Hospital. His wife, Wendela Bowser, died Oct. 15, 1997.
His survivors include two sons, John George Bowser, Kansas City, and James Galen Bowser, Traverse City, Mich.; three daughters, Alice Roberta Hickey, Pittsburgh, Ann Louise Stadelhofer, Hot Springs Village, and Ruth Marie Bowser, Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Gertrude Bright, Angel Fire, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedarville Funeral Home, Hot Springs Village.

ROGER E. BURKE
Roger Eldon Burke, 19, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Burke was born Aug. 5, 1978, in Pittsburg, Kan., and had lived in this area since 1986. He attended Blue Springs High School, and was a carpenter with Jim Hill Construction. He was a member of the American Motorcycle Association, and competed in Motocross racing in the 125 cc class.
His survivors include his parents, Leeanna and Michael Eldon Burke, and a brother, Sheldon Colby Burke, all of the home; paternal grandmother, Maxine Burke, Fort Scott, Kan.; maternal grandparents, John and Shirley Stephens, Girard, Kan.; and his great-grandmother, Mildred Ellington, Bronson, Kan.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Scott. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

THELMA L. DABNEY
Thelma L. Stephens Dabney, 90, of Republic, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, in Balance Care in Republic.
Mrs. Dabney moved to Southwest Missouri in 1963,and had lived in Republic the last 14 years. She worked in the personnel office of Skaggs Memorial Hospital in Branson, Mo., before she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Newton, Kan.
Her survivors include a son, Merle L. Stephens, Independence; a daughter, Beverly Hilton, Republic; a sister, Josephine Hawk, Las Cruces, N.M.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Evergreen Cemetery, Republic. Arrangements will be under the direction of the Meadors Funeral Home, Republic.

RUBY DARLING
Ruby Darling, 92, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Research Medical Center.
Mrs. Darling was born Oct. 18, 1905, in Orrick, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She wasa clerical assistant for Montgomery Wards, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church.
Her survivors include two daughters, Shirley Beeler, Independence, and Karen Templeton, Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren, Michael Beeler, Mark Beeler and Ricky Beeler; and three great-grandchildren, Jason Beeler, Lisa Beeler and Jessica Beeler.
Services will be 2 p.m.Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

LINDA S. HURST
Linda Sue Hurst, 51, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Colonial Manor in Glasgow, Mo.
Ms. Hurst was born July 24, 1946, in Boonville, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area since 1967. She had been a credit manager for the Foley-Bellsaw Corp. since 1981. She retired as a master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1987. She also served in the National Guard for one year and in the Air Force for eight years before going into the Reserves. Shewas a member of St. Paul`s Lutheran Church in Independence, and a graduate of Brunswick High School.
Her survivors include her parents, Ercel and Nadine Hurst, and a sister, Dorothy Biere, all of Keytesville, Mo.; her companion, Marcella Fite, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were Sunday at the Berry Funeral Home, Salisbury, Mo. Memorial services will be at 7 tonight at St. Paul`s Lutheran Church in Independence. Burial was in Lutheran Cemetery, Salisbury, with graveside services provided by Salisbury VFW Post 391. The family suggests contributions to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Salisbury, or the Colonial Manor Nursing Home courtyard project.

LILLIE M. RICE
Lillie May Rice, 98, Odessa, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at New Haven Nursing Center, Odessa.
Mrs. Rice was born Nov. 8, 1899, in Sherman, Texas, and lived in Independence, Oak Grove and Bates City before moving to Odessa. She was a homemaker and a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church. She had worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Walter Leslie Rice, in 1986, two daughters, and one great-grandson.
Her survivors include three sons, Lloyd Rice, Harrah, Okla., Harold Rice, Jones, Okla., and Al Rice, Bates City; a sister, Helen Tyson, Jones; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were today at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the church.

MILDRED A. BRECHT
Mildred Alice Brecht, 68, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.
Mrs. Brecht was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Kansas City, and had lived in this area her entire life. She was a homemaker. She was a devout Christian and a charter member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Peculiar, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Pauline Phillips and her brother, DonPhillips.
Her survivors include her husband, Lloyd A. Brecht of the home; a son, Rick Brecht, Independence; two daughters, Vickie Long and Brenda Slaughter, both of Lee`s Summit; four brothers, Al Phillips, Independence, Bob and Larry Phillips, both of Cross Timbers, Mo., Terry Phillips, Dover, Mo.; three sisters, Barbara McNurlin, Judy Shockey and Gail Franklin, all of Independence; nine grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Ellen Garrigus, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Garrigus was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Foster, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Conn in 1990.
Her survivors include a son, Kenneth Conn, Macon, Mo.; four daughters, Nancy Orozco and Velma Jones, both of Independence, Evelyn Whittenburg, Harrison, Ark., and Linda Hubbard, Kansas City; 23 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

GERTRUDE V. KOLOSICK
Gertrude Viola Kolosick, 93, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Kolosick was born June 7, 1904, in Spruce, Mo., and had lived 55 years of her life in Independence. In her early life she had been a school teacher for the Spruce School System and had also worked for the Lake City Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Independence and was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Engineers Auxiliary. Her husband, A.W. Kolosick, died in 1966.
Her survivors include a son, Robert Kolosick, Independence; a daughter, Lois Burton, Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Appleton City (Mo.) Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.

WESLEY H. MARCKS
Wesley Herman Marcks, 84, Higginsville, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown.
Mr. Marcks was born Nov. 8, 1913, in Higginsville. He was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marietta Anna Marcks on Aug. 3, 1985. He was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ.
His survivors include his son, Louis Kent Marcks, Hingham, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Louise Schemmer, Independence, and Jeanette Edna Marcks, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; two sisters, Lorene Frevert, Concordia, Mo., and Meta Frevert, Richmond, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Salem United Church of Christ, Higginsville. Interment will be in Salem Church Cemetery. Friends may call from one hour prior to service time in the church assembly room. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Church Memorial Fund.

W.L. "JR." POVENMIRE
W.L. "Jr." Povenmire, 79, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Povenmire was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Gridley, Kan., and had lived in this area for 48 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 21. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Independence Optimist Club. He had been in the auto body repair business in the Kansas City area for many years, most recently at Hal Quinn Buick as body shop foreman, retiring in 1979.
His survivors include his wife, Luella Povenmire of the home; a son, John Povenmire, Independence; a daughter, Marcia Longstaff, Texas; a sister, Hazel Cokeley, Palco, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Independence.Burial will be in Mount Washington Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m.Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
