Woodrow W. Rogers, 84, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Alpine North Nursing Home.
Mr. Rogers was born Feb. 25, 1913, in McLouth, Kan., and had lived most of his life in Independence. He had worked at various times as a truck driver, cab driver, streetcar conductor, retail salesman, carpenter and block layer. He retired in 1972 from the Independence City Street Department. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had attended the Slover Park congregation for many years. He was a 3rd Degree Mason and was also a member of Masonic Lodge 76, Independence. His wife of 49 years, Juanita Tousley, died three years ago. His survivors include a son, Roy W. Rogers, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Stacey Rogers, Kansas City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

LOIS J. STARR
Lois Jane Starr, 63, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Maywood Terrace Living Center, Independence.
Mrs. Starr was born Jan. 19, 1934.
Her survivors include her husband of 40 years, Clarence P. Starr of the home; two daughters, Jane P. Starr, Harrisonville, Mo., and Lois Ann Starr-Walker, East Independence; a son, Clarence D. "Doug" Starr, Buckner; two sisters, Ruby South, Independence, and Judy Richardson, Kansas; two brothers, Paul Pollard Sr., Richmond, Mo., and Leland Pollard, Lee`s Summit; and four grandchildren, James and Michael Walker and Michelle and D.J. Starr.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Washington Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at New Salem Funeral Home.

Trenton Scott Barker, infant son of Scott E. and Laura L. Barker, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997.
Trenton was born May 28, 1997, in Independence. His survivors include his parents and his sister, Darian D. Barker, all of Grain Valley.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, at D.W. Necomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., at the chapel.

LUCY L. FEEBACK
Lucy Lea Feeback, 88, Latour, Mo., died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville, Mo.
Mrs. Feeback was born July 21, 1909, near Latour, Mo. She worked in the comptroller department, then later as a switchboard operator, at the General Motors Leeds Plant in Kansas City until she retired in 1971. She was a member of the Latour Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Mae Wheat, and a brother, Lowell French.
Her survivors include her husband, Forest Feeback, of the home; one daughter, Joyce Aszmus Herman, Lee`s Summit; two step-sons, L.D. Feeback and Don Feeback, both of Garden City, Mo.; a step-daughter, Bonnie Hon, Harrisonville; one granddaughter, Janet Herman Franklin; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and a niece

KIRK M. LYONS
Kirk Michael Lyons, 34, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Lyons was born April 13, 1963, in Independence. He was an Eagle Scout and a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Lyons, in 1995.
His survivors include his father, David Lyons, Odessa, Mo.; one brother, David Lyons, Jr., Independence; two sisters, Lara Allen, Kansas City, and Kelli Hurley, Grandview; and a daughter, Kathryn Bennett Shaw Lyons, Independence.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1400 W. Sheley Road, Independence. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. MURREL I. MART
Murrel I. Mart, 70, Lincoln, Mo., died Thursday, Dec.18, 1997, at the Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, Mo.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1927, near Humansville, Mo. He later moved to Independence. He worked for Union Wire Rope in Kansas City for 31 years, retiring in 1986. In 1988,he and his wife, Agnes, moved back to Lincoln, Mo.
His survivors include his wife, Agnes, of the home; five sons, Bruce Mart and Stephen Mart, both of Independence, Cris Mart, Lee`s Summit, Murrel Mart, Blue Springs, and Scott Mart, Holden, Mo.; two brothers, Roy Mart, Grain Valley, and Marvin Mart, El Dorado Springs, Mo.; five sisters, Elsie Rosicka and Ethel Coffin, both of Tulsa, Okla., Mildred Tally, Little Rock, Ark., Meta Darringer, Humansville, Mo., and OpalZucca, Independence; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Davis-Miller Funeral Home in Lincoln, Mo. Friends and family may call from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday. Cremation.

LETA B. MORIARTY
Leta B. Moriarty, 92, Independence, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at Rosewood Health Center.
Miss Moriarty was born Feb. 26, 1905, in Crestline, Kan. She was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Aug. 22, 1917.
Her family moved to Independence in 1923. She graduated from Kansas City Junior College in June 1925, then studied at Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg. She later studied by correspondence with the University of Kansas.
Miss Moriarty assisted Richard J. Lambert, "Saints Herald" managing editor, at the General Conference press table in 1926. She later worked at the Herald Publishing House in Independence, first as secretary, then as assistant editor. She also wrote for the Stepping Stones, Zion`s Hope, and Vision.
She also worked as a legal secretary in Kansas City, then returned to church work as a secretary and public relations assistant at the RLDS Auditorium. She retired from that position in 1972.
Miss Moriarty had been a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation since 1926, where she sang in the choir. She also sang in the Messiah Choir for 31 years and was a member of the church`s first Radio Choir. She taught Sunday school and was active with the Girl Scout movement from 1933 to 1935. She was also a piano teacher in Independence.
Her survivors include her sister-in-law, Jerry Moriarty, Spokane, Wash.; a niece, Barbara Anderson, Pleasant View, Tenn.; a nephew, Bruce Moriarty,Spokane, Wash.; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m, Monday, at Speaks Midtown Chapel in Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel.

JACK L. SKAGGS
Jack L. Skaggs, 78, Blue Springs, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at St. Mary`s Manor in Blue Springs.
Mr. Skaggs was born May 15, 1919, in Kansas City. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs, the American Legion Post No. 499, and Masonic Lodge No. 76.
His survivors include his wife, Mary Skaggs, of the home; a step-son, Phillip Cooper, Independence; one niece and one nephew; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Blue Springs Cemetery.

BEATRICE J. SNAPP
Beatrice Julian Snapp, 98, Santa Ana, Calif., died Monday, Dec. 15,1997, at Harbor Rest Hoe in Santa Ana, Calif.
Mrs. Snapp was born in San Francisco, but her family moved to Independence after the Great San Francisco earthquake. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School. She was a member of the RLDS Church and a delegate to the church`s World Conference on several occasions. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne F. Snapp, and three brothers, Clinton B. Julian, Virgil A. Julian and Reginald W. Julian.
Her survivors include five nephews, Virgil A. Julian Jr. and Richard C. Julian both of Independence, Richard O. Julian of Phoenix, Ariz., Douglas Julian, Imperial, Calif., and Don Julian.
Internment will be Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. The family suggests friends make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.

MARTHA L. TREGRE
Martha Lucille Nelson Hoffman Tregre, 74, Pryor, Okla., died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997.
Mrs. Tregre was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo. She was an auditor and worked for Pryor House Motor Inn. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 25years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Joseph Tregre.
Her survivors include her son, Larry Eugene Dennis, Independence; three daughters, Judy Lee Wesack, San Antonio, Texas, Bonnie Joanne Mathis, Pryor, Okla., and Jacqueline Rae Tregre, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

WALTER C. BITTLE
Walter C. Bittle, 79, Raytown, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Bittle was born May 8, 1918, in Independence. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone after 36 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Raytown and was a Mason. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, received the WWII Victory Medal, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His son, Charles Bittle, died in 1968.
His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jean Bittle of the home; a daughter, Laura Bittle-Cleland, Kansas City; and two grandchildren, Camber Cleland and Carlton Cleland.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the building fund at the First Baptist Church, 6224 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Mo. 64133.

Tyler Miles Bray, 34, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997.
Mr. Bray was born Aug. 8, 1963, in Independence, where he lived before moving to Springfield.
His survivors include his parents, Roger Miles and Sharon Kuehnlein; a sister, Rishelle Bray; six half sisters, Fawn Brents, Dianne Forbes, Susan Wachel, Stephanie Seabrook, Angela Miles and Kristina Miles.

GEORGE W. DURBIN
George W. Durbin, 73, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.
Mr. Durbin was born May 4, 1924, in Independence, and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 385 and Six Mile Baptist Church. His wife, Ruth Durbin, died in 1993.
His survivors include four sons, Jim McLaughlin and Don McLaughlin, both of Independence, John McLaughlin and Dan McLaughlin, both of Blue Springs, and Jr. Brown, Urich, Mo.; a daughter, Pam Allee, Sleeper, Mo.; a brother, Eugene Durbin, and a sister, Jannie Kabrick, both of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

EDNA I. EASTER
Edna I. Easter, 87, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Ms. Easter was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Cameron, Mo., and moved to this area in 1927. She attended Central Business College in Kansas City and worked for area businesses before joining the Religious Education Department of the RLDS Church in 1945. She continued her education at area colleges, receiving her master`s degree in education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1969. Her interests in girls` work, camping and water safety were fundamental in the development of those programs in the RLDS Church. As a certification standards visitor for the American Camping Association, she also assisted in developing camping programs for other organizations throughout the country. She was editor of Children`s Resource Materials in the RLDS Christian Education Office, writing, editing and supervising the production of materials for church school and vacation church school use. She retired in 1975. She worked on the staff and was director of numerous camps, reunions, retreats and workshops. She was the recipient of many awards, including the first Youth World Service Award.
Her survivors include two sisters, Emily L. Dunsdon, Tabor, Iowa, and Ellen I. Eliason, Lyme, N.H.; four brothers, Marion L. Easter, Warsaw, Mo., Charles H. Easter, Toms River, N.J., Clarence R. Easter, Trumbull, Conn., and Finis C. Easter, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the RLDS Stone Church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Camping Association or Outreach International.

HAROLD E. "SONNY" GENTRY
Harold E. "Sonny" Gentry, 60, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Gentry was born July 6, 1937, in Kansas City, and had lived in Independence for 24 years. He had been an electrical technician for Bell & Howell for eight years. He was an aviation electrician first class for the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1979 after 20 years of service. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the Fleet Reserve, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church and was a Knights of Columbus 4th degree. His son, Patrick Gentry, died in 1979.
His survivors include his wife, Carol J. Gentry of the home; two sons, Phillip E. Gentry, San Jose, Calif., and Matthew Kevin Gentry, Independence; a daughter, Lynne Drummond, Independence; and a grandson, Patrick Blaise Gentry.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown, where military honors will be performed. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.

HERMAN C. HIGGINS
Herman C. Higgins, 84, Austin, Texas, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Breckenridge Hospital, Austin.
Mr. Higgins was born July 24, 1913, in Milo, Mo., and had lived in Austin for four years. He was a letter carrier for the Kansas City Postal Service, retiring in 1981, and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 30. He was a member of the Methodist faith and a Navy veteran.
His survivors include two sons, Norman C. Higgins, Long Island, N.Y., and Douglas P. Higgins, San Marcos, Texas; five grandchildren, Kelley, Mike, Pat, Laurie and Kristin; and three great-grandchildren, Peter Douglas Scharff, Tyler Sean Higgins and Calvin Chandler Higgins.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Longview Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

HELENE G. KECK
Helene G. Keck, 88, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997.
Mrs. Keck was born July 23, 1909, in Kansas City, and lived in Pennsylvania from 1959 until 1967, and in Independence for 10 years before moving to John Knox Village in Lee`s Summit 20 years ago. She attended Lowell Grade School and was a 1927 graduate of Manual High School. She was one of the first women to attend the Kansas City School of Law, where she was a member and dean of the Kappa Beta Pi Legal Sorority. She was awarded her Bachelor of Law Degree in 1932. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter`s United Church of Christ, from whose membership was formed the Amega and Roda Clubs, in which she was active. She and her husband helped form the Fifty-Fifty Class, a group for married couples at the church. Her husband, Martin F. Keck, died in 1949.
Her survivors include three children, Kathlene Keck Meyer, Independence, Jonathan Keck, Portland, Maine, and Martin Keck, Sacramento, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Melinda Hutchison, Rachelle Meyer, Jonathan Meyer, Daniel Keck and Aaron Keck.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 110th and Holmes, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the organ fund at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

FRANK J. MALLETTA
Frank J. Malletta, 77, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Liberty Hospital.
Mr. Malletta was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Centerville, Iowa, and had lived in this area for 35 years. He was a tool setter for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Mary`s Catholic Church and Moose Lodge 10 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, both in Sugar Creek.
His survivors include a daughter, Judy Morrow, Liberty; a sister, Lena Gareffa, Mosby, Mo.; two granddaughters, Karla Hendon and Rhonda Dodd; and three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Kevin and Crystal Dodd.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Prichard Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Excelsior Springs. ALVIN R. MAY JR.
Alvin Roderick May Jr., 85, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. May was born July 9, 1912, in Independence and was a lifelong resident of Independence. He attended William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and graduated from Colorado College, Colorado Springs. He was a retired captain in the U.S. Navy, and flew during World War II in Central and South Pacific. He served three years as commanding officer of Fleet Tactical Squadron VR883 at NAS Olathe, Kan. For many years, he owned May Grain Co. in Independence, and later worked for Northwestern National as a life underwriter.
He was a member and past governor of Quiet Birdmen, Kansas City Hanger; a charter member and past president of Naval Air Transport Service Inc.; and member of Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Pensacola, Fla., Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tirey J. Ford Post 21 American Legion, Association of Naval Aviation, Military Order of the World Wars, OX5 Aviation Pioneers, Order of Daedalians-National Fraternity of Military Pilots, Combat Pilots, National Association for Uniformed Services, Masonic Lodge of Independence, Legion of Honor Unit Ararat Shrine Temple of Kansas City and Retiree Council of Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
His survivors include his wife, June Fidelia May of the home; a son, Dr. Alvin Roderick "Rod" May III, Independence; a daughter, Marsha June Bean, Liberty; two sisters, Rowena Wilhelm, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Eleanor Lane, Albuquerque, N.M.; and four granddaughters, Anna Malia May, Marjorie June May, Dr. Marchelle June Bean and Melissa May Bean.

EDWARD J. METZ
Edward J. Metz, 76, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Metz was born March 25, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan., and had lived in Independence for 39 years. He was a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and the Korean War. His military service includes various assignments in the United States at Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Hood, Texas, and the Kansas Military District. His foreign service includes assignments with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa and the 7th Division in Korea. He became a prisoner of war in Tunisia on Dec. 2, 1942, and was released on May 9, 1945, in Germany.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp, three loops; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Arrowhead and two Bronze Service Stars; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars; and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Catholic faith.
His survivors include his wife, Pat Metz of the home; a son, Brian Metz, Kansas City; four daughters, Melinda Butler, Hardin, Mo., Susan Barbosa, Sugar Creek, Carole Reed, Independence, and Laura Andrick, Dallas Center, Iowa; two sisters, Helen Metz, Kansas City, Kan., and Pat Moore, Eudora, Kan.; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army.
