ROBERT J. YORK 

Robert J. York, 70, Sheridan, Colo., died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Porter Care Hospital, Denver. 

Mr. York was born July 30, 1927, in Rochester, N.Y., and had lived in Independence from 1947 until moving to Sheridan in 1981. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Raytown for 17 years. He had been employed for 15 years with the Littleton (Colo.) School District until retiring in 1986. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris C. York in 1994. 

His survivors include two sons, Stephen York and James York, both of Independence; two daughters, Robin Jenkins and Donna Williams, both of Sheridan; a brother, William H. York III, Odessa, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

Services were Nov. 7 at the Drinkwine Family Chapel, Littleton. Private burial was in Littleton (Colo.) Cemetery.

BEVERLY O. BUTLER 

Beverly O. Butler, 73, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997. 

Mrs. Butler was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Kansas City. She had worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. She attended Scarrett Elementary School, and was a 1942 graduate of Northeast High School. She was a member of the East 39th Street RLDS congregation, Carpenter Union Band in Kansas City, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Drum and Bugle Corps in Kansas City. She was a 50-year member of Josepha Chapter 63 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Multiple Sclerosis Mother of the Year in 1962. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marietta K. Butler Skidmore. 

Her survivors include a son, Robert Butler, Independence; her former husband, W.F. Butler, Independence; six grandchildren, Robert Skidmore, James Skidmore, Jason Butler, Brian Butler, Shannon Ohms and Nikki Ohms; and two great-grandchildren, Eric Skidmore and Austin Skidmore. 

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church, 15006 E. 39th St. The family suggests contributions to the church.

C. VERNE EATON 

C. Verne Eaton, 96, Lee`s Summit, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at the Jefferson Health Care Center in Lee`s Summit. 

Mr. Eaton moved to Lee`s Summit from Russell, Kan., in 1987. He was a 1920 graduate of Salina (Kan.) High School and a 1922 graduate of Kansas Wesleyn College of Commerce. He worked for the Lee Hardware Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1970. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred R. Hanna Eaton, in 1987. 

His survivors include two nieces and their husbands, Celia and Bud McMickell, and Karen and Jack Price, all of Lee`s Summit. 

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Aldersgate Methodist Church, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be at a later date in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. RHODA M. JOHNSON 

Rhoda M. Johnson, 86, Oak Grove, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa. 

Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Bates City, and was a lifelong Oak Grove resident. She worked in the cafeteria of Unity Inn of Kansas City, the Shoe Factory in Odessa, Jackson County Hospital and at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for more than 13 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary 499. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Johnson in 1972, a son, James D. Johnson in 1967, and a grandson, Steven Gallagher in 1995. 

Her survivors include a son, Gerald Leon Johnson, Blue Springs; four daughters, Barbara E. Carlyle, Las Vegas, Nev., Marjorie M. Arth, Odessa, Sharla N. Romaker, Independence, and Shirley A. Stewart, Belton, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

RONALD E. MANUEL 

Ronald Eugene Manuel, 40, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs. 

Mr. Manuel was born Feb. 9, 1957, in Independence. He was a graduate of the Electronics Institute of Kansas City and was employed by the Greif Brothers Corp. He served in the Army for two years. He was a member of the Singles Department of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, and head of AA. 

His survivors include two brothers, Dwight W. Manuel, Higginsville, Mo., and Dale W. Manuel, Mayview, Mo.; two sisters, Vickie D. Duren, Odessa, and Alice A. Manuel, Kansas City; his grandmother, Laura Phillips, Oak Grove; four nephews; and five nieces.

THOMAS W. SAMS 

Thomas Warren Sams, 58, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at his home. 

Mr. Sams was born Aug. 18, 1939, in Lamoni, Iowa, and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a laborer, mechanic and had been the maintenance supervisor for several apartment buildings before his retirement. 

His survivors include a daughter, Tammie Sams, and a son, Scott Sams, both of Independence; five sisters, Mary Sawyers, Dorothy Moon, Donna Ledbetter, Fay Sams and Kay Sams, all of Independence; and two grandchildren, Tommy Coleman and Anthony Shineman.

Theresa May Smith, 81, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee`s Summit. 

Mrs. Smith was born May 1, 1916, in Ottawa, Kan., and lived in Independence from 1934 until moving to Lee`s Summit in 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Cross Trail Kickers, Hicks `n Chicks, Diamond Castoffs and Squarenaders square dance clubs. She had also been a member of the Rock Creek PTA and a Girl Scout leader. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jack E. Smith Sr. 

Her survivors include two sons, Jack E. Smith Jr., Lee`s Summit, and Jerry Smith, Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Janice Gaylord, Atlanta; a sister, Bertha Wilhite, Baldwin City, Kan.; a brother, James T. Lester, Raleigh, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Jeff Smith, Jason Smith, Grace Gaylord, Joshua Smith, Jacob Smith and Eli Smith.

EUGENE E. SWANSON 

Eugene Edwin Swanson, 74, Kansas City, Kan., died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at the Sharon Lane Nursing Center, Shawnee, Kan. Mr. Swanson was born June 19, 1923, in Kansas City. He worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway for 31 years, retiring as secretary-treasurer of the board in 1974. He and his first wife, Marcia Lovie Coulter Swanson, owned and operated Raytown Catering Service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Crestview Assembly of God. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1982. 

His survivors include his wife Cora Reynolds Swanson, Kansas City, Kan.; a son, Eugene E. JOHN A. WALKER 

John Abraham Walker, 57, Gravois Mills, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at his home. 

Mr. Walker was born July 19, 1940, in Osawatomie, Kan., and lived in Osawatomie and Independence before returning to Osawatomie. He moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in May 1997. He attended Osawatomie schools, graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1958. He attended Kansas University and Kansas State College in Pittsburg, where he earned his bachelor`s and master`s degrees in teaching. He was a teacher for 30 years, and taught at Bridger Junior High School for many years, retiring in 1992. He was president of the Independence Jaycees, and devoted a great deal of time to IBS Industries Inc., a sheltered workshop. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osawatomie, Elks Lodge 921 and the National Education Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Roberta Hoppe Walker in 1987. 

His survivors include his wife, Joe Ann Dial Cochran Walker of the home; a daughter, Sherri Prichard, Independence; his mother, Eleanor, Olathe, Kan.; two stepsons, Marc Cochrane, Paola, Kan., and Robert Cochrane, San Francisco; a brother, Thomas Walker, Stover,Mo.; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Prichard, Candice Prichard, Thomas Cochrane, Alex Cochrane and Emmaline Cochrane.

W. Eugene "Gene" Dixon, 72, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at his home.

DEVETTA HARRIS 

Devetta Morris Harris, 82, Lee`s Summit, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Menorah Medical Center. 

Mrs. Harris was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Glenstead, Mo., and lived in Sedalia, Mo., for 23 years before moving to Lee`s Summit in 1989. She was co-owner and operator of the Harris Davis Paint Store.

DEIGH W. IRWIN 

Deigh Wright Irwin, 71, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence. 

Mr. Irwin was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Kansas City. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He taught at William Chrisman High School in 1969, and at the Central Missouri State University Residence Center of Independence from 1970 to 1974. He was assistant state director of Cooperative and Distributive Education in Jefferson City from 1975 to 1982, and then became its director. He returned to Kansas City in 1982 and taught at Southwest High School, retiring in 1988 as the educational administrator of the Pioneer Campus of Metropolitan Community College. 

His survivors include his wife, Wanda Lou Irwin of the home; two sons, David W. Irwin, Colorado Springs, and Jack A. Melton, Blue Springs; two daughters, Debra W. Wilson, Palm Desert, Calif., and Laura Y. Hartung, Blue Springs; a brother, Jim Irwin, Salt Lake City; a sister, DorisLalor, Ridgecrest, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. MARGARET E. JAMES 

Margaret E. Willhoit James of Kansas City died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital. 

Mrs. James was born Jan. 8, 1906, in Cleveland, Tenn., moving to this area at the age of five. She lived in Oregon, California, and Overland Park, Kan., before moving to Kansas City in 1972. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School, and received her registered nursing degree in 1927 from the St. Luke`s Hospital School of Nursing and was president of her graduating class. Her first position was with the Public Health Division of the Kansas City School Board, where she was assigned to Mount Washington school for seven years. In 1937, she received a bachelor`s degree in public health nursing from the University of Minnesota, and served as director of Public Health Nursing in the city Health Department from 1939 to 1947. 

She was on assignment for seven years as a senior nurse officer with the U.S. Public Health Service in the Middle East. In 1947, she became a career commissioned officer for the U.S. Public Health Service and was stationed in Athens, Greece, where she set up public health nursing services throughout the country. From 1951 to 1954, she taught post graduate classes for Public Health Nurses at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and in 1955, she went to Washington, D.C., to serve with the Tuberculosis Division of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1957, she was assigned to the Division of International Health and the Division of Indian Health to work on behalf of the American Indians on reservations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. 

Her final assignment was in the Public Health Service in the Regional Office in San Francisco, where she served as public health service consultant in nursing to the Social Security Administration in the early days of Medicare. She retired in 1970. She was a member of the AAUW, League of Women Voters, Women`s City Club, president and past presidents, United Nations Association, International Relations Council, St. Luke`s Nurses Alumni, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Red Cross and Current Issues Discussion Group. She also supported many cultural activities: The Theater League, Repertory Theater and The Annual Book and Author Dinners. She was a member of Prairie Baptist Church and the Women in Today`s World at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl James. 

Her survivors include a brother, Alvin Willhoit, Blue Springs; two sisters, Alice Morris, Blue Springs, and Louise Jackson, Independence; and many nieces and nephews. 

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Baptist Church, 75th and Roe.The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church or St. Luke`s Hospital School of Nursing.

JOSEPH W. JONES 

Joseph Walter Jones, 68, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at his home. 

Mr. Jones was born June 16, 1929, near Grovespring, Mo. For several years, he was a radio broadcasting engineer and worked at various stations in Missouri, Kansas and Wisconsin. He twice served in the U.S. Army and was last honorably discharged in 1947. He was the founder of Barley Loaf Ministry, which worked to encourage people in their faith and to spread the word of God through printed materials. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen Simmerman Jones, Nov. 27, 1996. 

His survivors include eight children, Joseph Stephen Jones, Odgen, Utah, JoEllyn Hardin, Chillicothe, Mo., Roxanna V. Stephens and Susan D. Decker, both of Independence, Charles Aaron Jones, Raytown, Phillips Michael Jones, Cameron, Mo., John Clifford Jones, Oak Grove, and Paul G. Jones, Irving, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Jones, Kansas City; three sisters, Florence Neiderhiser, Jewell, Kan., Loretta Swanigan, Independence, and Rosalee Whitehat, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

MICHAEL D. LUDOVICO 

Michael Dominick Ludovico, 71, Kansas City, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at his home. 

Mr. Ludovico was born July 17, 1926, in Newark, N.J., and lived in Monterey, Calif., for 26 years before moving to this area in 1985. He was retired from the Federal Police. He worked for the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Independence from 1991 until recently. He was a member of the Independence Branch of Jesus Christ Restored Church. He was a 22-year Amry veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and received the Bronze Star. 

His survivors include his wife, Sallie Ludovico of the home; two sons, Michael D. Ludovico Jr. and Thomas P. Ludovico, both of Roseville, Calif.; two brothers, Pasquale Ludovico, New Jersey, and Oranzo Ludovico, Hazlet, N.J.; two sisters, Rosemary Mattia, Atlantic City, N.J., and Stella Dalley, Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Cathlene Ferguson, Independence, and Collene Morris, Kansas City; six grandchildren, Jeff Ludovico, Thomas P. Ludovico Jr., Jennifer Ludovico, Candace Ludovico, Ashley Ludovico and Kristina Ludovico; and four stepgrandchildren, Mathew Ferguson, Jessica Morris, Kaitlyn Ferguson and Stephanie Ferguson.

DORIS L. SNAVELY 

Doris Lee Snavely, 85, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997. 

Mrs. Snavely was born April 6, 1912, in Mammoth Springs, Ark., and lived in Kansas City, Kan., and Lake of the Ozarks before returning to this area six years ago. The last two years she was a resident of the Woods Chapel Retirement Lodge. She had worked for Gateway Sporting Goods before she retired. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. Her husband, William Snavely, died in 1992. 

Her survivors include two daughters, Irma Owen, Blue Springs, and Noram "Corky" McCray, Bellville, Texas; two sons, Bill Snavely, Lenexa, Kan., and Larry Snavely, Bonner Springs, Kan.; a sister, Florence White, LaCygne, Kan.; two brothers, Emmett Frost, Houston, Mo., and Leo Frost, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren, Sandy Boring, Susan Devane, Mark Snavely, Tommy McCray, Nancy Knight, and Melissa Quiring; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at the chapel.

E. MADELINE BAKER 

E. Madeline Higginbotham Baker, 72, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at Research Medical Center. 

Mrs. Baker was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Bonner Springs, Kan. She was a member of the auxiliaries of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7900 and American Legion Post 598. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Baker in 1989. 

Her survivors include a stepson, Tom Baker, Liberty, Mo.; a brother, Dale Atwood Higginbotham, Independence; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

Services will be 9 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the VFW Post 7900 cancer fund.

ANDREW J. BOSTON 

Andrew J. Boston, 94, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence,died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at John Knox Village Care Center in Lee`s Summit. 

Mr. Boston was born Aug. 27, 1903, in Cato, Mo., and lived in Independence for many years before moving to Lee`s Summit. He worked for the Ford Motor Co.,retiring as a stationary engineer in 1967. He was a member of the Wings Flying Club and repaired antique clocks for many years. 

His survivors include his wife of 65 years, Hazel Boston of the home; a niece, Helen Coil, Independence; and a nephew, Lea Boston, Clearwater, Fla. 

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

BOBBY H. MOSS 

Bobby Hugh Moss, 65, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at his home. 

Mr. Moss was born Oct. 26, 1932, in Heart, Ark., and had lived in Independence for 38 years. He was receiving clerk with Sears and Roebuck for 29 years, retiring in 1987. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, and was a member of American Legion Post 332 and East Gate Masonic Lodge 630. 

His survivors include his wife, Wanda Hatman Moss, Independence; a sister, Lavern Stroud, Salem, Ark.; and a brother, Leonard Moss, Ash Flat, Ark. 

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, Mo. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JOHN A. SHEAHON, M.D. 

Dr. John A. Sheahon, 76, Lake Lotawana, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 1997, at his home. 

Dr. Sheahon was born July 2, 1921, in Kansas City. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He attended De La Salle High School, Rockhurst College and Creighton University. He served his residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and at Colorado General Hospital. He was a board certified OB/GYN, a chief OB/GYN at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs and Research Medical Center, and president of the Kansas City OB/GYN Society. He was also a member of the Credential Committee of Research Medical Center,a member of the medical staffs of Research Medical Center, Trinity Lutheran Hospital, St. Mary`s Hospital, and Baptist Medical Center. He was in private practice for several years in Raytown and Blue Springs. 

His survivors include his wife, Martha L. Sheahon of the home; five daughters, Mary Lou Shroeder, Olathe, Kan., Karen Williams and Patti Hessler, both of Lee`s Summit, Martha McGrew,Prairie Village, Kan., and Carol Farrington, Leawood, Kan.; two sons, John Sheahon III, Lee`s Summit, and Jim Sheahon, Blue Springs; and 14 grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the church, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Rockhurst College Scholarship Fund or to the Research Medical Foundation.
