Maple S. Owen, 84, Liberty, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Ashton Cart Care Center. 

Mrs. Owen was born Aug. 18, 1913, in Cross Timbers, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne C. Owen, and a great-granddaughter, Sherry Dover. 

Her survivors include a son, Danny Owen; a daughter, Wilma Stotts; a sister, Osie Walker; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. J. ANDREW SLOAN 

J. Andrew Sloan, 37, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence. 

Mr. Sloan was born on March 18, 1960, in Independence, and was a lifelong Independence resident. He had been a printer for the Center Stake of the RLDS Church. He served as a deacon in the New Walnut Park RLDS congregation. He was preceded in death by his father, Delmar Sloan in 1971. 

His survivors include his mother, Marjorie Drown, Independence; and two brothers, Jared Sloan, Independence, and Charles Sloan, North Kansas City.

WALTER T. STEVENSON SR. 

Walter T. Stevenson Sr., 78, Capaldo, Kan., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, Kan. 

Mr. Stevenson was born July 12,1919, in Kansas City, and lived in Independence before moving to Capaldo in 1973. He was a graduate of Northeast High School, Kansas City, and received a bachelor`s degree in vocational education, a master`s degree in education, and an education specialist degree, all from Pittsburg State University. He worked in the electronics industry and had taught vocational electronics in the Kansas City (Kan.) area Vocational Technical School and PSU. He owned and operated an electronic specialty shop in Capaldo for 18 years. He was a member of the Pittsburg RLDS congregation, Mensa International and was listed in the Mension Newsletter. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1937 to 1940, and a Navy veteran, serving from 1944 to 1945. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Fox Stevenson in 1970. 

His survivors include his wife, Shirley Winters Stevenson of the home; four sons, Walter T. Stevenson Jr., Topeka, Arthur Stevenson, Raytown, Phillip Stevenson, Headrick, Okla., and John Stevenson, Gardner, Kan.; two daughters, Beth Blanton, Hillsboro, Mo., and Susan Sage, Independence; a stepson, Roger Winters, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Forrest T. Stevenson, Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

WILBUR E. WHITESIDE 

Wilbur E. Whiteside, 80, Independence, died Monday,Oct. 27, 1997, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation in Smithville, Mo. 

Mr. Whiteside was born in Wichita, Kan., and had lived in this area for 60 years. He was a self-employed paper hanger, retiring in 1980. He was an Army veteran, a Mason and a member of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife,Nell Whiteside in 1974. 

His survivors include two sons, Terry Whiteside, Independence, and Tim Whiteside, Texas; a sister, Vernadeen Willix, Long Beach, Calif.; a friend, Sheila Arnold, Kansas City; grandson, Byron Whiteside, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.

ANASTASIA E. WITBOLSFEUGEN 

Anastasia Elizabeth WitbolsFeugen, 18, Independence, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, in Kansas City. 

Anastasia was born July 14, 1979, in Kansas City. She attended Red Bridge Elementary School and Center Junior High. She had been a Girl Scout and played the clarinet. She had attended The First Covenant Church of Kansas City and the College Park RLDS Church of Independence. At Martin Luther King Middle School, she was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and participated in Math Counts competition and National Academic League. She was a 1997 graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, and while a senior, she was reporter-historian of the Junior Classical League and participated in the state Latin competitions. She had been enrolled at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She worked at the KCPT Store of Knowledge and had previously worked at AMC Theaters. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Frederic William Jung, Hugo Christiaan WitbolsFeugen and Irene Elizabeth Schaeneweis Jung, and her step grandfather, Clyde Milton Marshall Jr. 

Her survivors include her father and stepmother, Robert WitbolsFeugen and Diane Marshall of the home; her mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Richard Bart Owens, Raymore, Mo.; three sisters,Francesca of Independence, Katrientje and Teminka, both of Raymore; a half sister, Emma of Independence; two stepsisters, Anna Garriock, Kansas City, and Dr.Lisa Goin, St. Joseph, Mo.; a stepbrother, John Bart Owens, Smithville, Mo.; paternal grandmother, Melanie WitbolsFeugen, Hinsdale, Ill.; step grandmothers, Ila Marshall, Independence, and Norma Owens, Camden Point, Mo.; and many aunts,uncles and cousins.

Cora E. Denkinger Akers, 98, Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997. 

Mrs. Akers was born June 11, 1899, near Hiawatha, Kan., and had lived in this area since 1933. During the 1940s, she worked at Montgomery Ward and at North American Aviation. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Akers. Her survivors include a sister, Sadie M. Lydia Mae Anderson, 76, Raytown, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at her home. 

Mrs. Anderson was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Calhoun, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was an electronics assembler for Rycon Instruments before she retired.

DEAN J. BERENDZEN 

Dean Josephine Berendzen, 86, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at her home. 

Mrs. Berendzen was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Eugene, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1957. She was a seamstress for Fox Manufacturing in Kansas City for 22 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of St. Ann`s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Berendzen in 1975. 

Her survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Berendzen and Nancy Marriott, both of Independence; two sons, Paul Berendzen, Versailles, Mo., and Wayne Berendzen, Sedalia, Mo.; two sisters, Nell Tellman, Eugene, Mo., and Ellen Slicker, Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Clifford Feltrope, Diamond, Ark., and Bill Feltrope, Kansas City; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Marys Home, Mo. Burial will be in Our Lady of the Snows Cemetery, Marys Home. Visitation will be held until 8 tonight at the Phillips Chapel, Marys Home, where the a rosary will be held at 3 and 7 p.m.

Alan W. Blake, 32, Redmond, Wash., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997.

Louis Burton, 67, Independence, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence. 

Mr. Burton was born June 14, 1930, in Clinton, Mo. He was a receiving clerk at Lakeside Hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1992. He had been a truck driver most of his life. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

LADONNA S. HURST 

LaDonna Sue Hurst, 48, Higginsville, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Research Medical Center. 

Ms. Hurst was born in Hot Springs,Ark., and lived in Lawton, Okla., before moving to this area eight years ago. She was a teacher at the Lakeview Woods State School for the past five years. She held a master`s degree in physical education and a specialist degree in special education. She was a member of the Odessa Evangelical Free Church.

JOSEPH W. "BILL" JONES 

Retired Army Maj. Joseph William "Bill" Jones, 73,Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at the Rosewood Care Center. 

Mr. Jones was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He worked for the Future Farmers of America and the Department of Agriculture for 20 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence. He was very active in community theater, as well as Tiffany`s Attic and Waldo Astoria, received many awards for acting in movies and did many commercials. He was an Army veteran. His wife, Virginia Jones, died in 1997. 

His survivors include a son, Dr. Scott Jones, and a daughter, Alexa Thompson, both of Kansas City; a brother, Alex Jones, Phoenix, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. HAZEL A. KIRTLEY 

Hazel Alice Nickell Kirtley of Kansas City, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Bishop Spencer Place, Kansas City. 

Mrs. Kirtley was born April 27, 1912, in Maude, Mo., and lived in Moberly, Mo., Independence and Santa Fe, N.M., before returning to this area in July. She was the Eastern Jackson County director of the American Lung Association, and later worked in the Kansas City office. She received a fine arts degree from the University of Missouri and was a violinist. She was a member of Delta Gamma, PEO, Independence Junior Service League, MU Phi Epsilon and Trinity Episcopal Church. She joined the staff of the Medical Center of Independence as its first volunteer coordinator. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge John Marcus Kirtley in 1964. 

Her survivors include three daughters, Karen Kirtley Stubbs,Kansas City, Mary Ellen Kirtley, Overland Park, Kan., and Marcia Alice Kirtley Brockmire, Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren, David Kirtley Stubbs, Laura Culbertson Stubbs, Julie Ann Stubbs Waldman, Timothy William Brockmire and Patricia Lee Brockmire; four great-grandchildren; and one niece.

MARY B. MOORE 

Mary Belle Moore, 79, St. Joseph, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at her home. Mrs. Moore was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Kansas City, and lived in Clay County for more than 41 years, moving to St. Joseph in 1994. She worked for the Postal Service for more than 30 years, including 10 years as postmaster in Missouri City, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Missouri City Baptist Church, andwas a graduate of Manchester Elementary School and East High School in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Nelson R. Wait, Harry William Hendricks and Lynn G. Moore, and one son, Nelson Ray Wait Jr.

BEULAH F. PIMBLOTT 

Beulah Frances Pimblott, 91, Independence, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997. 

Mrs. Pimblott was born in Blair, Neb., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was a registered nurse at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital until she retired. She was a charter member of the South Crysler RLDS congregation, had been active in the camping program, was a Women`s leader and historian for the church. Her husband, James William Pimblott Jr., died in 1986. 

Her survivors include a son, James W. Pimblott III, and two daughters, Jean F. Gossett and Cheryl K. Coffman, all of Independence; a brother, David Lytle, Long Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Mary Ruth, Suzan, Ginger, J.D., Jennifer, Jeff and Jana; and eight great-grandchildren.

Wendela Louise Bowser, 81, Hot Springs Village, Ark., died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at St. Joseph`s Regional Health Center. 

Mrs. Bowser was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Kansas City. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Presbyterian Kirk in the Pines Church, P.E.O., Chapter CH, Hot Springs Village Women`s Club I, Presbyterian Women Kirk and Phi Beta Kappa. 

Her survivors include her husband, Dr. John F. Bowser, Hot Springs Village; two sons, John George Bowser, Kansas City, and James Galen Bowser, Traverse City, Mich.; three daughters, Alice Roberta Hickey, Pittsburgh, Ann Louise Stadelhofer, Hot Springs Village, and Ruth Marie Bowser, Aurora, Colo.; a brother, John Underwood Bott,Hot Springs Village; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Michael Roy Erwin, 92, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital. 

Mr. Erwin was born Feb. 6, 1905, in Longton, Kan.,and lived in Kansas and Florida before moving to Grandview in 1993. He moved to Lee`s Summit earlier this year. He was a truck driver in Florida before he retired. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Erwin in 1980. 

His survivors include his wife, Inez Pearl Erwin, Fairhope, Ala.; a son, David Auer Erwin, Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Patricia Fierst, Lee`s Summit; a sister, Joyce Jacobs, Holiday, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

VIOLA FAUSTLIN 

Viola Faustlin, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at the Independence Manor Care Center. 

Mrs. Faustlin had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a clerk for the Kansas City School District for 22 years, retiring in 1978. Earlier she was cafeteria manager for Fairmount Elementary School. She was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church of Independence, Joy Belles and the Women`s Christian Fellowship Class. She had been active in the PTA, Boy Scouts of America and various neighborhood activities. 

Her survivors include a son, Norman A. Faustlin, Lee`s Summit; three daughters,Muriel Woods, Independence, Hazel Faustlin, Grain Valley, and Shirley Mullikin, Bonne Terre, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY M. McKELVEY 

Dorothy Margaret Cochran McKelvey,84, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her home. 

Mrs. McKelvey was born July 23, 1913, in New Kensington, Pa., and lived in Massillon, Ohio, Florida, Canton, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., before returning to Massillon. She moved to Independence after her retirement. She attended St. Petersburg (Fla.) Junior College, and completed her bachelor`s degree at Malone College in Canton.She worked in the fingerprint division of the FBI for several years in Washington, D.C., and then taught fourth grade in Massillon at both Lincoln and Whittier schools. Earlier she worked for the Eaton Manufacturing Co. She became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Massillon in 1950, having been active in the women`s department there, as well as having served as a choir member and teacher. She was also a member of the evening section of the Massillon Women`s Club, and the American Association of University Women. After she moved to Independence, she became a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, and was active in church activities, including Gather Inn. She maintained her membership in AAUW, and was a member of the Independence Retired Teachers Association, Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Elliott McKelvey in 1956. 

Her survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Anne Anderson, Tulsa, Okla., and Eileen Joanne McKelvey, Independence; a son, James Boyd McKelvey, Independence; a brother, Albert Cochran, Brewster, Ohio; three grandchildren, Max, Allison and Emily; a great-grandson, Zachary; and many nieces and nephews. 

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Private services and burial will follow at a later date in Ohio. Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Gift of Hope Hospice or The Temple Fund.

Mr. Stokes was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Flemington, Mo. He served in the Navy and retired from IBM after 34 years of service. He was a member of Norfleet Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 76. 

His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Glenda Stokes; three daughters, Sheila Stokes-Begley, Sonya Stokes and Sharon Stokes-McKee; his father, Clyde Stokes; a sister, Joyce Krasser; a grandson, Robert McKee; two step-granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; a niece; three nephews; a great-niece; and three great-nephews. 

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hinton-Gibson Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial will be in Brooking Cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
