Monroe

Section 30, Township 47, Range 33W

Near the Kansas-Missouri State Line, about 2 miles southwest of the little town of Martin City, Missouri, is to be seen a stone shaft or monument about 12 feet high, in the middle of a cornfield. This monument has been carefully protected by a fence which is made of galvanized pipe and four stone corner posts. This fence encloses a little burying spot about 10 square feet. On this monument is found the following inscription:

JAMES H. MONROE
Died December 10, 1872
Age, 33 years, 6 months, 1 day

ELEANOR, daughter of J. H. and AMANDA MONROE
Died September 24, 1872
Age, 1 year, 8 months, 24 days
In the silent tomb we leave thee
Till the morn when Christ appears
Then with joy we hope to greet thee
Far beyond this vale of tears
