GPS Coordinates: N36.597073 W81.30526

Surveyed by: James and May Cox in Sept 1990, Joe W. Phipps, and Rich and Ginger Ballard in April 2003.

Comments:
The cemetery, which is on the right side of the road, cannot be seen from the road. There is a locked gate leading to an old field filled with broom sedge.

It is necessary to walk down the ridge through the broom sedge to the edge of the woods at the far end of the field. The cemetery is not maintained.

A large tree fell across the cemetery some years back and broke some of the stones and obscured others. The trunk was sawed into sections but not removed.

Mr. Phipps estimated there were 20 or 25 unmarked graves here. We would concur but have shown locations of field stones which he included in his count of unmarked graves.

Fairwood Cemetery

Location: West of Troutdale

Directions:
From Troutdale head west about 2 miles on Fairwood Road (Rt 603) to an unnamed road.
A sign identifying the cemetery points north on this unnamed road toward the cemetery.
The cemetery is at the end of the road about one half mile from Fairwood Road.

GPS Coordinates: N36.700180 W81.474762

Surveyed by: Jeff Weaver and Ginger Ballard on 4 Mar 2003; updated Oct 2008.

Comments:
\The cemetery is fenced and generally well maintained, although at the time of our survey evidence of cattle was present. This cemetery was apparently established by families who lived near and worked at the Fairwood bandmill in the early 20th century.

The bandmill operation was abandoned in the Great Depression, and much of the land in this community was incorporated into the Jefferson National Forest.

Despite the lack of local population, the cemetery is still in use. A number of graves are marked only by crosses. The appearance of the ground made us think that there may be some graves with no visible markers.

Between 2003 and 2008 some wooden crosses were replaced with metal crosses and other crosses or handmade markers were replaced by carved stones. Some of the other hand-done markers had been painstakingly repainted with more information added to them. This cemetery is well maintained.

This cemetery predates Potato Creek United Methodist Church, which was established in 1865 with the oldest marked grave being that of Mary A. Halsey who died 8 Oct 1845. The cemetery contains an old section of graves marked only by field stones; this section is said to be a slave cemetery.

The church is no longer active but was part of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. This listing also includes information from a 1994-1995 survey by Stella Todd and Emma Phipps.
